Ronwen Williams opens up about his mistakes against Dortmund
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams revealed the mistakes that cost his side a 4-3 loss to German giants Borussia Dortmund in a thrilling group stage match at Cincinnati's TQL Stadium on Saturday night, although the South African side played a highly competitive match against the German side.
An errant pass turned into a big black nightmare
In the 16th minute, the young South African goalkeeper miscued a pass in the 16th minute that was immediately followed by Borussia Dortmund's Felix Nmecha, who capitalized on the mistake with great intelligence and quick thinking to put the Bundesliga side ahead.
Speaking about this major mistake he made, the South African declared that it was his fault for the first goal and that he will definitely try to fix these mistakes with the team, saying:
It’s not nice to concede a goal like that. But you know, we are a team that takes risks. So, before I received the ball, I obviously saw ‘Tebza’ there, but he got a call from Marcelo Allende to move away. It was just one of those unfortunate situations. But we learn from it, and we keep going
However, we showed that we can compete. Yes, obviously, they are physically bigger, but it’s all about the mind; if your mentality is right, you can go out there and compete with the best, and that’s what we showed. We had a very good chance in the first-half, and I’m just proud of the boys for their efforts and the desire to keep fighting. Now, the gap is not that big. I think we have proved that.
