Serge Obassa leaves Nigeria for Ethiopia

Serge Obassa has officially left Nigeria. According to exclusive information from Foot-Africa, the Beninese goalkeeper has signed a one-season contract with Hawassa City Sport, a top-flight club based in southern Ethiopia. The move comes just a few weeks after he joined Kano Pillars on July 30, 2026.

A goalkeeper crowned champion in Nigeria

Serge Obassa arrives in Ethiopia with solid experience of African football. With Remo Stars, he was crowned Nigerian champion during the 2024-2025 season and was also named the league’s best goalkeeper.

Before his time in Nigeria, the Benin international had played for several clubs in his country, notably Buffles du Borgou, Requins FC and AS Cotonou. His career gradually enabled him to establish himself as one of the leading goalkeepers in Beninese football.

A new chapter after the 2025 AFCON

An international with the Cheetahs, Serge Obassa was part of the Benin squad at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco. Benin reached the round of 16 before losing to Egypt after extra time.

At 30, Serge Obassa will now discover the Ethiopian league with Hawassa City, where he has a season to confirm his status and continue his international career.
