World Cup 2026: probable South Africa lineup against Mexico

South Africa is set to make its return to the World Cup stage after a sixteen-year absence. Bafana Bafana will take on Mexico this Thursday, June 11, at Mexico City's Estadio Azteca in the opening match of the 2026 World Cup. This symbolic fixture harks back to the inaugural clash of the 2010 edition, which ended in a 1-1 draw in Johannesburg.

For this encounter, head coach Hugo Broos is expected to stick to his usual setup, built around a compact and disciplined block. Captain Ronwen Williams will guard the South African goal behind a defense featuring Khuliso Mudau, Ime Okon, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, and Aubrey Modiba.

In midfield, the trio of Teboho Mokoena, Yaya Sithole, and Thalente Mbatha will be tasked with controlling the tempo against the Mexicans. Further forward, Relebohile Mofokeng and Oswin Appollis are likely to provide width and support for leading striker Lyle Foster.

The only player in the squad plying his trade in the English Premier League, Burnley's centre-forward will be one of Bafana Bafana’s key attacking weapons as they look to make a successful comeback on the world stage.

Probable South Africa lineup

Williams (capt.) – Mudau, Okon, Mbokazi, Modiba – Mokoena, Sithole, Mbatha – Mofokeng, Appollis – Foster.
