The Folarin Balogun affair sparked heated debate ahead of the World Cup round of 16 clash between Belgium and the United States. Suspended after receiving a red card against Bosnia and Herzegovina, the American striker was ultimately cleared to play following an exceptional decision by FIFA.

This situation provoked the anger of Rudi Garcia, who called out the decision as difficult to understand. But after Belgium’s 4-1 victory, the Red Devils’ coach made a point of praising Balogun’s conduct. According to Garcia, the striker approached him before the match—a gesture the coach particularly appreciated:

Balogun came to speak with me. It's not his fault, he has nothing to do with it. He is not the one to blame. I told him that and appreciated that he took this step.

For Rudi Garcia, the controversy was solely about the decision regarding the regulations, not the player himself.
