World Cup: Virgil van Dijk's dream with the Netherlands

On the eve of the Netherlands' debut in this 2026 World Cup, Virgil van Dijk makes his ambitions crystal clear. Appearing alongside the Dutch head coach at the team's first press conference in Kansas City, the Oranje captain admitted the squad is aiming high for the tournament.

Virgil van Dijk wants to lift the World Cup trophy with the Netherlands. On the eve of the Oranje's first match, the captain made no secret of the team's ambitions.

"How far can we go? Hopefully all the way. We know how tough it will be, but first the focus is on Japan. We're not looking too far ahead, but we have big dreams and we'll give everything," the centre-back declared.

A final to carve out a little more history

Beyond the collective goal, a symbolic milestone could also mark the 34-year-old's journey. With 92 caps for the Netherlands before the start of the tournament, Van Dijk would reach the 100-international mark if his team played and won the World Cup final.

The Dutch captain acknowledges he's aware of this personal milestone, while insisting it is not his main focus.

"Yes, I'm aware of it. It would be very special, but that's not where the focus is," he admitted.

Earlier, Van Dijk had already touched on the symbolic weight such an achievement would carry:

"I am aware that the World Cup final would be my 100th match for the Netherlands. It would be a full circle moment for me."

For now, the Oranje remain focused on their opening clash with Japan, hoping to turn their big dreams into reality as the tournament unfolds.
