Zamalek vs CR Belouizdad: White Knights edge closer to third continental title
Zamalek booked their place in the CAF Confederation Cup final on Friday 17 April after a goalless draw against Algeria’s CR Belouizdad at Cairo International Stadium securing qualification with a 1-0 aggregate victory.
The Egyptian side advanced thanks to their first-leg win in Algiers managing the return leg with discipline in a tense contest that offered few clear chances.
Disallowed goal the key moment
The match’s defining incident came in the first half when CR Belouizdad thought they had taken the lead. Oday Dabbagh found the net with a header in the 28 minute but the goal was ruled out after VAR review for offside.
That moment proved decisive as Belouizdad were unable to recover from the setback despite increasing their attacking efforts later in the game.
Controlled approach sees Zamalek through
Zamalek approached the match with caution, prioritising defensive organisation after their narrow 1-0 win in first leg at Nelson Mandela Stadium on Friday 3 April.
The game remained largely balanced particularly in midfield, with both teams struggling to create sustained attacking pressure.
While Belouizdad pushed forward in the second half especially after the 70th minute ,, Zamalek’s back line held firm under pressure.
The Egyptian side showed composure in key moments managing the tempo and limiting clear opportunities for the visitors.
Final within reach
With this result, Zamalek move one step closer to a third Confederation Cup title having previously lifted the trophy in 2019 and 2024.
They will now face the winner of the other semi final between USM Alger & Morocco’s Olympic Safi in the final.
