The Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) is considering introducing several significant changes to the Champions League format, starting from the 2025/2026 season.
According to the German newspaper "Bild", UEFA's Competition Committee aims to reduce the physical burden on players while enhancing the level of competitiveness in the competition. Three main innovations are currently under consideration:
- Elimination of extra time (except for the final)
In the event of a draw after regular time in the second leg of knockout stages, the teams will go directly to a penalty shootout. Extra time would only be retained for the final.
- Advantage for the Top 8
The eight teams that finish at the top of the 36-club general standings will receive a strategic advantage: they will play their second-leg matches at home in the quarter-finals and semi-finals. This privilege, currently reserved for the round of 16, would thus be extended.
- Country protection
UEFA wants to reinstate a rule previously applied, aimed at preventing clashes between clubs from the same league before the quarter-finals. This season, several all-domestic showdowns occurred in earlier rounds (PSG vs Brest in the playoffs, Bayern Munich vs Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16).
