English Football sets new precedent with 2 match ban for undetected handball goal

West Bromwich Albion striker Aune Heggebo has been handed a two match suspension by the Football Association after a regulatory commission ruled that he deceived match officials with a controversial handball goal during his side's 2-1 victory over Norwich City.

A controversial goal & landmark FA charge

The 25 year old opened the scoring at Carrow Road last Saturday in contentious fashion,steering a cross into the net using an outstretched arm.

Following the incident, the FA charged the Norwegian international on Tuesday with a breach of FA Rule E3.1.

Despite West Brom lodging a formal appeal, an independent regulatory commission upheld the charge, issuing a two match ban on the grounds that Heggebø committed a deliberate handball in a successful attempt to score.

While retroactive disciplinary action in English football has traditionally been reserved for simulation and diving, West Brom believe this ruling represents the first case of its kind involving a handball since the regulations were amended two years ago.

Baggies defend Heggebø over 'Split-Second' incident

West Brom mounted a staunch defence of their forward, arguing that the contact was completely instinctive and accidental.

The club highlighted that Heggebø had merely "0.1 seconds to react" after the ball unexpectedly deflected off Norwich goalkeeper Vladan Kovačević.

"Given the non deliberate nature of the handball, the club maintains that it cannot reasonably be deemed an intentional act of deception" West Brom stated in an official release confirming they have formally requested the full written reasons from the FA.
