2024 Women's AFCON: Left out of Nigeria squad, Gift Monday responds
Gift Monday is not included in the list of 24 Super Falcons for the 2024 Women's AFCON in Morocco, announced on Friday, June 20, 2025. From the United States, where she plays for the Washington Spirit, she has shared her disappointment but, above all, her support for the team.
Justin Madugu, head coach of Nigeria, recently revealed his squad for the 2024 Women's AFCON without Gift Monday. The decision caught more than a few observers off guard. The Washington Spirit forward currently has four goals in nine matches in the ongoing 2025 National Women's Soccer League season.
Nevertheless, Madugu opted for less experienced profiles, such as Chioma Okafor, an American college player from Connecticut who is still unknown on the international stage. The 23-year-old's omission did not go unnoticed, prompting a response from Monday herself.
“I have seen the official squad list for the upcoming AFCON and yes, my name is not on it. Although it hurts and is a tough pill to swallow, I want to make it clear that I hold no grudge or resentment. I am healthy, fit, and still deeply in love with the game and the green white green,” she wrote on social media.
Gift Monday has decided to turn this setback into motivation to improve. She insists she remains a staunch supporter.
“Even if I won't be on the pitch with the team in Morocco, my heart will be there every step of the way. I remain fully committed to cheering on my country from home,” she added.
