2026 World Cup: Norway and England head to extra time after a wild match (1-1)

After 90 hard-fought minutes, Norway and England remain deadlocked at 1-1 in the 2026 World Cup quarterfinals and will have to settle things in extra time.

Played under sweltering heat in Miami, the first half was hampered by a sluggish tempo, interrupted twice for hydration breaks. Despite dominating possession, the English struggled to break down the Norwegian block. Against the run of play, Andreas Schjelderup finally broke the deadlock in the 36th minute with a curling shot that sailed over Jordan Pickford. However, England responded in stoppage time with a stunning goal from Jude Bellingham, who slalomed through defenders before firing past Ørjan Nyland. Harry Kane also had a goal disallowed for offside moments later.

Norway takes control, VAR to the rescue

After the break, Thomas Tuchel made several attacking changes, but failed to spark his side. Instead, Norway seized control of the second half. In the 55th minute, Torbjørn Heggem appeared to give the Scandinavians the lead with a header from a corner, only for VAR to disallow the goal due to a foul by Erling Haaland earlier in the play.

A nail-biting finish leads to extra time

From there, the end of the match turned into a Norwegian siege. Haaland again threatened Pickford with a powerful header, while Alexander Sørloth missed a golden chance to clinch it on a two-on-one counterattack. Exhausted by the oppressive conditions, both teams made several substitutions but couldn't be separated. Norway and England will now battle it out in 30 minutes of extra time, with a spot in the semifinals up for grabs against the winner of Argentina vs Switzerland.
