Al Ahly Honor Departing Coach Marcel Koller After CAF Champions League Exit

Al Ahly officially honored Swiss coach Marcel Koller and his technical staff on Monday, just hours before Koller’s scheduled departure from Cairo.

Following Al Ahly’s exit from the CAF Champions league semifinals at the hands of Mamelodi Sundowns last Friday, the club announced Koller’s dismissal from his role after nearly 3 highly successful seasons.

According to reports, club president Mahmoud El Khatib personally welcomed Koller to the club’s headquarters in El Gezir where he presented him with special commemorative shield and Al Ahly's official flag as tokens of appreciation.

A Message of Gratitude and Loyalty

During the farewell meeting:

• El Khatib praised Koller’s dedication and achievements thanking him for everything he gave to the club.
• He emphasized that Koller remains part of the Al Ahly family and that the club’s doors will always be open to him at any time and for any event.

The official statement highlighted the club’s deep gratitude toward Koller & his staff which included Harald Gämperle, Carlos Bernegger, Yassin Mikari, Tizian Ndoyi and Reda El Hanfi.

Koller's Track Record at Al Ahly

Between Sep 2022 and Apr 2025, Koller:

• Managed 159 match.
• Won 108 game, drew 33 and lost only 17.
• Captured multiple domestic and continental titles including 2 CAF Champions league crowns.
• Led Al Ahly to consistent top tier performances despite recent setbacks such as:
  • Losing the African Super cup to Zamalek.
  • Exiting the Intercontinental cup semifinals.
  • Struggling domestically, now trailing Pyramids by 4 point in the Egyptian Premier league.

End of an Era

Although Koller’s tenure ends disappointingly close to the 2025 FIFA Club World cup where Al Ahly will represent Africa, his era is remembered as one of high achievement and professionalism.

Al Ahly now faces crucial summer both in appointing successor and preparing for the world stage.
