Argentina: Lionel Messi could return to action before the World Cup

Lionel Messi is edging closer to a competitive comeback after suffering a left Achilles tendon injury in his last match for Inter Miami. The Argentine captain may get some minutes in the two Albiceleste friendlies before his team kicks off their 2026 World Cup campaign against Algeria.

As the World Cup draws nearer, concern has been mounting in Argentina. At 38, Lionel Messi remains the Albiceleste's greatest asset, and his left Achilles injury had raised questions about his fitness for the tournament.

Scaloni reassures fans about his superstar's fitness

However, head coach Lionel Scaloni moved to calm Argentine supporters at a press conference ahead of the upcoming friendlies. "Leo is doing well, he has already trained partially with the group and is no longer completely sidelined. He could play a few minutes in the friendlies. He’s feeling much better and that’s a huge relief for us," said the coach.

These comments hint at a gradual return for the seven-time Ballon d'Or winner, though no unnecessary risks will be taken with the tournament just days away.

Two friendlies to regain match sharpness

Argentina will play two warm-up matches before their World Cup opener. The reigning world champions will face Honduras in College Station, Texas, overnight from Saturday to Sunday, then take on Iceland in Auburn, Alabama, overnight from Tuesday to Wednesday.

These friendlies could allow Messi to get back on the pitch and test himself in a match environment. The Argentine staff hopes to see their captain steadily build up his match fitness so he’s ready for their World Cup debut.

The Albiceleste will kick off their campaign on June 17 against Algeria. While caution remains the watchword, the latest news from the Argentine camp is encouraging enough to fuel hopes that Lionel Messi will once again lead his nation on the world stage.
