Ballon d’Or Winner Turns Investor: Modrić Enters Championship with Big Move
Luka Modrić the iconic Real Madrid midfielder has reportedly reached agreement to purchase minority stake in Swansea City, the English Championship side based in Wales according to PA Media.
The 39 year old Ballon d'Or winner is the latest high profile player to enter football club ownership though the exact details & value of his investment haven't been disclosed.
Ownership Move Not Linked to Retirement
Despite speculation, the move doesn't indicate Modrić's preparing to retire. His contract with Real Madrid expires this summer but there's been no confirmation yet on whether he'll renew or depart after over decade of service at the Bernabéu.
The Croatian star remains active and could continue playing either with Madrid or elsewhere, beyond this season.
Swansea City's Current Status
Swansea currently sit 12th in the Championship, 8 points off the playoff spots with 4 games remaining in the season. The Welsh club's previously played in the Premier League but has been outside the top flight since the 2017 /18 season.
Modrić Joins Player Investor Wave
This move aligns Modrić with growing group of current footballers investing in clubs:
- Kylian Mbappé holds majority stake in French 2nd tier side Caen.
- Vinícius Júnior owns share in Portuguese club Alverca.
Modrić one of the most decorated footballers of the 21st century, has won six UEFA Champions League titles and 4 La Liga titles with Real Madrid. His off field move reflects forward thinking approach to post retirement planning, even as he continues to perform at the top level.
Whether or not he continues with Real Madrid next season Modrić’s influence on & off the pitch remains as strong as ever.
