Bayer Leverkusen: Xabi Alonso announces his departure (official)
It was no longer a secret to anyone, but now it’s official: Xabi Alonso has confirmed he will leave Bayer Leverkusen at the end of the season. And Real Madrid looks ready to welcome him with open arms.
Arriving at the helm of the German club in 2022 when the team was battling at the bottom of the table, the former Spanish international completely transformed Leverkusen’s fortunes.
In less than two years, the young Iberian tactician delivered the club’s very first Bundesliga title, capping an historic unbeaten season, and added a German Cup to complete a remarkable double.
All eyes on Real Madrid for Alonso!
Still in the hunt for a podium finish with two matches left, Alonso chose this moment to make a major announcement. In a press conference ahead of the clash with Borussia Dortmund, he made his departure official for the summer of 2025:
“I am grateful to Bayer 04, my players, my staff, all the club employees and above all our incredible supporters. Thank you for everything,” he said with emotion.
Everything now points to Real Madrid, where he shone as a player, as his next destination. Highly respected Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano immediately confirmed the news. Here’s a glimpse:
