Former Bafana Bafana top scorer Benni McCarthy has been appointed as the new head coach of Kenya, signing 2 year deal, the Football Kenya Federation confirmed.

The 47 year old embarks on his 1st managerial role at the international level, having previously coached Cape Town City and AmaZulu while also serving as assistant coach to Erik ten Hag at Manchester United.

“After thorough selection process, we're confident that Benni McCarthy is the right man to take our national team forward” said Football Kenya Federation President Hussein Mohammed.

McCarthy replaces Engin Firat who stepped down in December following Kenya’s failure to qualify for AFCON 2025.

The ex striker who scored 30 goal in 70 cap for South Africa expressed his pride in taking on the role and vowed to improve Kenya’s performance.

Kenya currently sits 4th in Group F of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers and ranks 108th in the FIFA standings.

The Harambee Stars face Gabon & Gambia later this month in must win fixtures to keep their slim hopes of World Cup qualification alive.
