Brighton lead Arsenal 2-0 at half-time after an intense, controlled first half, rewarded with two superb goals.

This is probably one of the most eagerly anticipated fixtures of this 5th Premier League matchday, and Brighton are responding impressively for now. Just a few days after eliminating Manchester United from the Carabao Cup by a 3-2 scoreline, the Seagulls rode that confidence to get the better of league leaders Arsenal during the opening 45 minutes.

Very aggressive in the press, comfortable in tight spaces and capable of playing out cleanly under pressure, Fabian Hürzeler’s men imposed their rhythm on the reigning English champions. Arsenal, usually accustomed to controlling their matches since the start of the season, appeared short of answers for long periods against the opposition’s intensity.

Groß paves the way, Kostoulas strikes just before half-time

Brighton turned their dominance into a goal through Pascal Groß, who produced a superb strike that gave David Raya no chance. The opener rewarded a first half in which the hosts took more initiative and regularly disrupted Arsenal’s build-up from the back.

Arsenal did have a huge chance to make it 1-1 late in the first half through Bukayo Saka. The Gunners failed to take it, and were immediately punished. After a swift transition, Charalampos Kostoulas unleashed a low shot that found the back of the net to make it 2-0 just before the teams headed into the dressing rooms.

Mikel Arteta’s men will now have to show a completely different face in the second half to preserve their perfect start to the season. The Spanish coach does, however, have plenty of options on his bench and should quickly look to add greater attacking presence.

With this half-time scoreline, Brighton move temporarily into 3rd place in the table with 10 points, behind Arsenal and Manchester City. A win would represent another major achievement for a Seagulls side already full of confidence after their spectacular qualification at Old Trafford this week.
