Brighton confirmed their excellent run of form by comfortably beating Arsenal, who were top of the table before kick-off, by a convincing 3-0 scoreline.

There was no miracle for Arsenal. Trailing 2-0 at half-time after a first period completely controlled by Brighton, the Gunners were expected to come out after the break and try to turn the game around. The contest had already swung in the Seagulls’ favour before the second half even began, thanks to goals from Pascal Groß and Charalampos Kostoulas.

But instead of a London response, it was Brighton who put the result beyond doubt. In the 57th minute, Chema Andrés scored the third goal from a set piece, sealing a 3-0 victory that was as clear-cut as it was deserved. Fabian Hürzeler’s men allowed their opponents very little space and punished every defensive mistake.

Arsenal never managed to get back into the game

The statistics illustrate the gap between the two teams. Brighton finished the match with 11 shots to Arsenal’s four, including four on target compared with just one for the Gunners. The Seagulls had only 43.9% possession, but were far more dangerous and incisive in the decisive areas.

This defeat brings an end to Arsenal’s perfect start in the Premier League. The reigning English champions had won all four of their opening matches and arrived at the Amex as league leaders. They leave with their first league defeat of the season, having never genuinely found a solution to Brighton’s pressing and transitions.

The performance is all the more impressive because Brighton had already pulled off a notable feat in the Carabao Cup. Three days earlier, the Seagulls had knocked Manchester United out at Old Trafford with a 3-2 victory after trailing 2-0. That spectacular qualification against Manchester United had already sent out a strong message.

Above all, Brighton are confirming their impressive attacking power at the start of the season. After five Premier League matches, the club now have 16 goals, an average of 3.2 goals per game. The Seagulls have scored at least three goals in four of their five league matches: 4-0 against Aston Villa, 4-3 at Chelsea, 5-0 at Coventry and now 3-0 against Arsenal.

Brighton move into the top three, Arsenal lose top spot

This victory temporarily reshapes the top of the table. Brighton climb to third place with 10 points, behind Manchester City and Arsenal. The Gunners remain on 12 points but drop to second place, overtaken on goal difference by Manchester City, who also have a game in hand.

For Brighton, this week therefore feels like a genuine demonstration of strength: Manchester United eliminated in the Cup, followed by a 3-0 league victory over Arsenal. The Seagulls head into the international break full of confidence and with one of the most prolific attacks in England.
