Tottenham suffered another Premier League defeat against Aston Villa, with the latest loss increasing the pressure on Roberto De Zerbi.

The downward spiral continues for Tottenham and Roberto De Zerbi. Just days after their elimination from the Carabao Cup by Liverpool (3-1), Spurs slipped to another defeat, this time at home against Aston Villa (2-3), on Matchday 5 of the Premier League. Before kick-off, both teams were already near the bottom of the table, with Tottenham 17th and Aston Villa 18th.

Manzambi gives Villa the lead just before the break

Tottenham pushed forward for a long time without finding a breakthrough before being punished in stoppage time at the end of the first half. In his very first Premier League start, Johan Manzambi opened the scoring in the 45th+4 minute. Ideally set up by Emiliano Buendía, he beat Antonín Kinský to give the Villans the lead at the worst possible moment for Spurs.

This latest attacking setback extended the problems that had already been evident since the start of the season. Tottenham had still not scored in the league after four matchdays, a first in the club’s history.

Nicolas Jackson is beginning to settle in

After the interval, Aston Villa extended their advantage. In the 67th minute, Nicolas Jackson finished off a move initiated by John McGinn to double the lead. The goal, confirmed after a VAR review, rewarded the Senegalese striker, who is gradually beginning to settle in with his new team.

Jackson had already opened his account for Villa in the Champions League against Club Brugge. His first goal for the Villans came on the European stage, before this latest strike in the Premier League.

Buendía makes it three, Tottenham react too late

Already the provider for the opening goal, Emiliano Buendía then turned scorer in the 79th minute. Set up by Boubacar Kamara, the Argentine made it 3-0 and appeared to have definitively sealed the outcome of the match.

Introduced in the 83rd minute in place of Sandro Tonali, Conor Gallagher gave Spurs hope three minutes later. From a pass by Mohammed Kudus, who had also come on during the match, the English midfielder reduced the deficit to 3-1 and in the process scored Tottenham’s first Premier League goal of the season.

Tottenham then threw everything they had left into the attack. In the 90th+7 minute, centre-back Jan Paul van Hecke beat Zion Suzuki to bring Spurs back to 3-2. The goal, scored in the 97th minute, made the final seconds unbearably tense, but Aston Villa ultimately held on to their advantage until the final whistle.

Tottenham drop into the relegation zone

The situation is already becoming a concern for De Zerbi. After five matchdays, Tottenham are now 18th and find themselves in the relegation zone. Aston Villa can breathe a little easier with 4 points, moving up to 15th place.

For Spurs, this late reaction therefore cannot erase another defeat that extends an extremely difficult start to the season. Aston Villa, meanwhile, leave London with three valuable points and a Nicolas Jackson who is becoming increasingly comfortable within the Villans’ setup.
