CAF Champions League: Al Ahly aims for unprecedented feat against Mamelodi Sundowns!

Al Ahly hopes to achieve an unprecedented feat as they travel to South Africa to face Mamelodi Sundowns, in the first leg of the CAF Champions League semi-finals for the 2024/2025 season.

Although the "Red Devils" have defeated Sundowns five times, all these victories were secured on Egyptian soil. A victory in South Africa would be a historic achievement that the club aims for to strengthen their chances of qualification to the final.

Since the first encounter between the two teams on December 8, 2001, Al Ahly has never managed to win on Mamelodi Sundowns' turf. The heaviest score recorded between the two clubs remains the 5-0 victory for the South Africans during the 2019 Champions League quarter-finals, at home and in front of their fans.

History of encounters between Al Ahly and Sundowns

Al Ahly qualified for the semi-finals after defeating Al Hilal of Sudan in both legs with an aggregate score of 2-0.

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns secured their semi-final spot by defeating Espérance Sportive de Tunis 1-0 in the first leg, before drawing 0-0 in the return leg.

The two clubs have faced each other 16 times in official competitions: 14 times in the CAF Champions League and twice in the African Football League. The record is perfectly balanced with 5 wins for each team and 6 draws.

The first leg between Al Ahly and Mamelodi Sundowns is scheduled for April 18 at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in South Africa, while the return leg will be played in Cairo at the international stadium on the 25th of the same month.
