CAF Champions League final second leg: What do the rules say if the first leg score is repeated?
The Egyptian side Pyramids face off against South Africa's Mamelodi Sundowns this Sunday evening in the second leg of the 2024-2025 CAF Champions League final. The match will be played at the Air Defense Stadium in Cairo.
The first leg, held in South Africa, ended 1-1—giving Pyramids a slight edge heading into the return fixture.
Founded in 2008, the Egyptian club stands on the brink of making history: clinching its very first continental title. Should they triumph, Pyramids would become the fourth Egyptian club to lift the Champions League trophy, joining Al Ahly, Zamalek, and Ismaily. It would also mark a first for Africa—no other nation has seen four different clubs crowned continental champions.
What happens if the first leg score (1-1) is repeated in the return match?
According to current Confederation of African Football (CAF) regulations, a goalless draw in the second leg would see Pyramids qualify, while Sundowns must win outright or claim a draw with a higher score than 1-1 to lift the trophy.
If the first leg score (1-1) is repeated in the return match, the tie will go straight to a penalty shootout—no extra time will be played.
It's also worth noting that the CAF Referees Committee has appointed Somali official Omar Abdulkadir Artan to oversee the second leg, assisted by a trio of referees from Kenya and Benin. The VAR room will be headed by Ethiopian referee Bamlak Tessema.
