CAF Cup: Stellenbosch FC stuns Zamalek and makes history
Stellenbosch FC did it. On Wednesday night, in the cauldron of the Cairo International Stadium, the South Africans achieved one of the greatest feats in their young history. By defeating Zamalek SC, the reigning champions, 1-0, they secured a historic qualification for the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup.
The scenario is worthy of an African tale. A team still new on the continental scene, having been thrashed during their last outing (5-0 against Berkane), stood firm with composure before striking with precision. In the first half, Steve Barker's men weathered the storm. Zamalek dominated but lacked precision, exemplified by Jaziri whose header went wide. Then came the pivotal moment. In the 79th minute, Lesiba Nku, who came on at halftime, delivered a pinpoint pass to Sihle Nduli who finished from close range in front of Mohamed Awad.
A historic goal, enough to bring down Zamalek at home. For the first time, the Stellies will see the CAF Cup semi-finals. Historic. Simply.
