In addition to the huge financial penalties, Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns also found themselves facing severe penalties that included the suspension of players, administrators and technicians from the team.

Mamelodi Sundowns have been fined R1.88 million for violence caused by their fans during their match against Esperance de Tunas in a match the Brazilians won by a clean goal at Loftus Versfeld on 1 April.

After the final whistle, the fans spoilt the good look of the stadium and the festive atmosphere by rioting and violence in the stadium.

1.88 MILLION tax on Mamelodi Sundowns!

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has come down hard on Tunisian giants Esperance following their fans' misconduct during the clash against Mamelodi Sundowns. The club was found guilty of violating Articles 82 and 83 of the CAF Disciplinary Code, resulting in a hefty $150,000 (R2.8 million) fine.

Meanwhile, Orlando Pirates have also been penalized after their goalless draw against MC Alger in the CAF Champions League quarter-final second leg on April 9, 2025, at Orlando Stadium. The Buccaneers must pay a combined $70,000 (R1.32 million) in fines for two separate offenses:

  • R941,095 for "improper conduct"

  • R376,438 for failing to provide sufficient stadium security

In addition to the financial penalties, Pirates official Ezekiel Matebula has been handed a four-match ban from all CAF-related activities, with two matches suspended for a one-year probationary period.

The club’s disciplinary troubles deepened as defender Nkosinathi Sibisi and goalkeeper Sipho Chaine each received a one-match suspension, which will remain suspended for one year pending further incidents.

CAF’s disciplinary committee stated:
“Orlando Pirates have been charged with misconduct and failure to ensure proper security measures during their CAF Champions League match against MC Alger.”
