CAN U20 2025: Senegal vs Nigeria, a clash of champions
The 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations enters its decisive phase with the quarter-finals set for Monday, May 12. Among today's fixtures, the showdown between Senegal and Nigeria stands out as one of the most anticipated. The match kicks off at 12:00 GMT at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium.
Heading into this encounter, Nigeria boasts a remarkable record with seven continental titles (1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 2005, 2011, 2015), making them the most decorated nation in U20 AFCON history. On the other side, Senegal, who lifted their maiden trophy in 2023, are eager to confirm their rise and defend their crown.
Both sides impressed in the group stage, each qualifying as runners-up in their respective pools. The Flying Eagles recorded one win and two draws—amassing five points and finishing second behind Morocco (7 points) in Group B. Meanwhile, the Young Lions also secured a single victory, along with a defeat and a draw, collecting four points and finishing second behind Ghana (7 points) in Group C.
This duel promises to be fiercely contested, with the Flying Eagles eyeing revenge. Nigeria is eager to make amends after their 2023 group stage clash against Senegal, which ended in favor of the Young Lions on February 19, 2023.
"We're up against the reigning champions. It'll be a tough match, but we want to qualify for the World Cup, and beating them is crucial to achieving that goal. I can't forget our first game at the last AFCON—we lost to them 1-0. This match means a lot to me and to the team. It's like a final. We want to avenge that defeat," said Nigerian captain Daniel Bameyi.
