CAN U20: DR Congo claims derby win over Central African Republic!
Relentless and full of talent, the young DR Congo side delivered a brilliant performance to defeat the Central African Republic (1-3) on Monday in the second round of Group C at the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations, held in Ismailia, Egypt. Trailing early, the Leopards showed real character as Noah Makanza’s brace turned the match on its head.
The Central Africans started strong, with an early warning shot from Ronaldo Lebron Zé in just the second minute. Their early dominance paid off as Raphaël Nzabakomada Yakoma capitalized on a rebound from Ryan Mayangila’s save to open the scoring in the 10th minute.
The Leopards hit back fast!
DR Congo wasted no time in responding. Tonny Talasi carved out several clear chances but lacked the finishing touch. After a series of unsuccessful set pieces, Congo’s persistence finally paid off: Makanza equalized in the 42nd minute, following a missed penalty by Talasi.
Right after the break, Makanza struck again (50’), before Samuel Ntanda sealed the score with a header (59’). Talasi and Tshilanda then missed opportunities to extend the lead even further.
Thanks to this win, DR Congo provisionally tops Group C. A draw against Senegal will be enough to secure a quarter-final spot. As for Central African Republic, they must beat Ghana to keep their tournament hopes alive.
