CAN U20: Guy Bukasa steps down after DR Congo's elimination
The young Leopards of DR Congo fell 1-0 to South Africa on Monday, May 12, in the quarter-finals of the 2025 U20 AFCON, bringing their tournament run to an end. In the aftermath, head coach Guy Bukasa announced he was stepping down from his role.
After more than two years at the helm of the U20 Leopards, Guy Bukasa has slammed the door just minutes after his team's defeat to South Africa (0-1 after extra time). It was during the post-match press conference that the Congolese tactician revealed his decision.
"I've been working for almost two years. We’ve been on this project for two years. We fought hard to put things in place. When the objective isn’t achieved, there’s no reason to force things. I thank everyone who believed in us. I think the contract should cover the time we spent, as there will be no future in this category. This is where I stop," said Guy Bukasa, as reported by the Congolese press.
This announcement still awaits confirmation from the Congolese Football Association (FECOFA). Despite his decision and the U20 Leopards' elimination, the Congolese coach says he is proud of his players’ performances and their run in the competition.
"I am satisfied with my players. A tribute to these boys, to the 24 soldiers who came to the AFCON, even those who couldn’t make it. They went above and beyond, adapting to certain demands, even in terms of lifestyle. You know, for us, the regular participation of youth teams in this kind of competition is not yet part of the culture. We tried to put something in place, unfortunately it ends here," concluded coach Guy Bukasa.
