Senegal, the defending champions, were defeated by Ghana (1-0) on Monday in the second matchday of the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations at the New Suez Stadium in Ismailia.

Too imprecise and lacking inspiration, the Lion Cubs were outplayed by a more clinical Ghanaian side.

Right from kick-off, the Black Satellites set the tone with an early warning from Abdul Aziz Issah, on loan from Dreams FC to FC Barcelona, who grazed the post just 16 seconds in.

Senegal responded timidly through Yaya Diémé and Serigne Fallou Diouf, but posed little real threat to goalkeeper Aseako.

Sharper and more decisive, Ghana logically broke the deadlock in the 15th minute with a low-driven strike from Emmanuel Mensah.

Qualification now in jeopardy

Despite a few attempts, such as a lob from Ibrahima Dieng (18th minute) or a half-volley in the 76th, the Senegalese never truly troubled their opponents. The injury exit of Yaya Diémé in the 69th minute further weakened a team already struggling.

With this setback, the Lion Cubs are now backed against the wall and must absolutely win against DR Congo in the final group game. Ghana, solid and efficient, will only need a draw to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Below is the Group C standings for the U20 AFCON:

  1. DR Congo: 3 pts
  2. Ghana: 3 pts
  3. Central African Republic: 1 pt
  4. Senegal: 1 pt
