CAN U20: Senegal knocked out!
As defending champions, Senegal will not reach the semi-finals of the 2025 U20 Africa Cup of Nations. The Young Lions were knocked out this Monday in the quarter-finals by a solid and clinical Nigeria (0-0, 3-1 on penalties) at the Suez Canal Authority Stadium in Ismailia.
Outplayed for much of the match, the Senegalese relied heavily on their goalkeeper Mouhamed Sissokho, who was outstanding up until the fateful penalty shootout.
The start of the match was one-sided. More aggressive, the Nigerians created a flurry of chances. Sissokho made his first save in the 12th minute, and was called into action again to deny a dangerous shot in the 20th.
Senegal reacted timidly: a harmless attempt from Amadou Badji suddenly became dangerous after a fumble by Harcourt, but Dieng failed to capitalize.
Senegal's late surge falls short
Just before halftime, Cheikh Tidiane Thiam struck the post with a header (43β). In the second half, the Young Lions showed more ambition. Fall Seck carved out a great chance (67β), then Serigne Fallou Diouf missed the target in extra time (102β). But it just wasnβt enough.
In a dramatic finish, the Nigerians proved more clinical in the penalty shootout (3-1) and booked their place in the last four. They will face the winner of DR Congo vs. South Africa in the semi-final.
