Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz has dealt major blow to Al Ahly’s management by turning down a potential return to Egypt.

With uncertainty surrounding the future of current coach Marcel Koller, Al Ahly were reportedly eyeing Queiroz to lead the team during the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States Jun 15 – Jul 13. However according to reports, Queiroz's firmly declined the offer.

The 71 year old tactician, who previously managed egypt during the 2021 AFCON and Arab Cup, remains committed to coaching national teams only, rejecting all club level offers including from the record African champions.

Queiroz'd guided Egypt to the AFCON final and world cup playoff but fell short of qualification after a heartbreaking penalty shootout loss to Senegal in 2022.

Al Ahly Coaching Search Hits More Walls

The Red Devils also explored other Portuguese options.

  • José Gomes currently in charge of Saudi side Al Fateh, denied any contact with Al Ahly stating his focus is fully on his current role.
  • Rui Vitória, the former Egypt boss and now head coach of Panathinaikos (Greece), also ruled out return to Egypt refusing any role in the local league.

Al Ahly’s board has reportedly linked Koller's fate to 2 decisive matches:

  • The Egyptian Premier League clash vs Pyramids on April 12
  • And the CAF Champions League quarter-final second leg vs Al Hilal (Sudan).

Will Al Ahly stick with Koller or seek a new helm before the Club World Cup? Stay tuned.
