Champions League 2026-27: Bayern and Atleti await Man United’s long-awaited return

Manchester United are back among Europe’s elite, with Atlético, Bayern, Leipzig and Villarreal awaiting Michael Carrick’s resurgent side in the league phase.

The wait at Old Trafford is over. Two seasons after their last appearance in the competition, Manchester United are returning to the Champions League in 2026-27. UEFA has now confirmed the league-phase dates, handing the Red Devils a route filled with both glamour and danger.

Eight fixtures to test Carrick’s rebuilt United

United begin at home to Sabah before consecutive away trips to Atlético de Madrid and Como. All kick-off times below are UK time.

• Wednesday, 25 November 2026 at 20:00: Sporting CP vs Manchester United
• Tuesday, 8 December 2026 at 20:00: Manchester United vs RB Leipzig
• Wednesday, 20 January 2027 at 20:00: Manchester United vs Bayern Munich
• Wednesday, 27 January 2027 at 20:00: Villarreal vs Manchester United

The schedule is evenly split between four matches at Old Trafford and four on the road. Bayern’s visit on Matchday 7 could have major consequences before a difficult finale at Villarreal. Early points against Sabah and Roma may therefore prove essential if United are to approach the closing weeks with room to breathe.

An eighth Champions League campaign since 2013-14

This will be Manchester United’s eighth Champions League campaign since 2013-14. They also featured in 2013-14, 2015-16, 2017-18, 2018-19, 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2023-24. Their previous appearance ended in the group stage before the club missed the next two editions, making this return particularly significant.

Michael Carrick put United back on course. Seventh in the Premier League when he arrived in January 2026, the Red Devils finished third on 71 points. They collected 39 points from his 17 league matches, winning 12, drawing three and losing only twice. That average of 2.29 points per game was the foundation of their revival and now gives Carrick’s side an opportunity to test its progress against Europe’s best.

Three European crowns, the latest in Moscow

Manchester United have been crowned European champions three times, in 1968, 1999 and 2008. Their most recent triumph came against Chelsea in Moscow, where a 1-1 draw after extra time was followed by a 6-5 penalty shootout victory. Eighteen years later, United return without being among the leading favourites, but with a clear ambition to rebuild their place at the top table.
