Club World Cup: Manchester City outclass Wydad

Wydad Casablanca kicked off their Club World Cup campaign with a 2-0 defeat against Manchester City on Wednesday, June 18, in Philadelphia.

The 2023 European champions made an immediate impact, with Phil Foden opening the scoring in just the 2nd minute after Benabid failed to deal with Savinho’s cross. Just before halftime, Jeremy Doku doubled the lead with a volley from a corner.

The Moroccans still had their chances, notably through Thembinkosi Lorch, who narrowly missed an equaliser when one-on-one with Ederson, and later tried his luck with a shot from midfield. The South African winger also set up a great opportunity for Cassius Mailula, but Ederson denied him once again.

In the second half, the Citizens kept the game under control, even after Rico Lewis was sent off with a straight red late on. Next up for Wydad: Juventus on Sunday. A response will be expected.
