Club World Cup: PSG vs Atletico, a high-stakes showdown in California

This Sunday, sport will attempt to reclaim center stage in Pasadena. While Los Angeles is rocked by violent protests, the Rose Bowl Stadium is gearing up for a blockbuster clash: Paris Saint-Germain versus Atlético de Madrid, kicking off Group B of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.

Despite the unrest off the pitch, the match is set to go ahead. International attention now shifts to the field, where two European heavyweights lock horns in a charged atmosphere. The legendary California arena is unlikely to reach its near-90,000 capacity—local passion for soccer remains limited, and the current situation isn’t helping matters.

On the sporting front, PSG arrive with a title to defend: reigning European champions. Luis Enrique and his men, still riding high after their Champions League triumph two weeks ago, may nevertheless lack a bit of freshness. The absence of Ousmane Dembélé, sidelined through injury, complicates matters, but Gonçalo Ramos, Bradley Barcola, and the sensational Désiré Doué are expected to ignite the Parisian attack, supported by the elusive Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

On the other side, Atlético de Madrid are looking to bounce back. Semi-finalists in the last Champions League, Diego Simeone’s men are hungry. Their goal: to regain confidence and intensity before La Liga kicks off. The last meeting between the two sides, last November, ended with a win for Los Colchoneros (2-1) at the Parc des Princes. But this PSG is a different beast, transformed by their continental triumph.

The winner of this high-voltage duel will be perfectly poised in a group that also features Botafogo and the Seattle Sounders.
