Egypt Beat Cameroon to Stay Alive in U-17 AFCON and World Cup Race
Egypt earned their first win at the U 17 Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco by defeating Cameroon 2 - 1 in the final Group B match on Sunday.
Despite early setbacks, the young Pharaohs staged comeback, overturning 1 -0 deficit to claim all 3 points.
Cameroon took the lead in the 30 minute through André Imeni but Hamza Abdelkarim equalized for Egypt just before the break 43’. In the second half, Abdelaziz El Zoghby netted the winner in the 67th minute to seal egypt’s 1st victory of the tournament.
With the result Egypt climbed to third place in Group B with 3 point after earlier defeats to South Africa & Burkina Faso. They'll now face the 3rd placed team from Group D in playoff for place at the FIFA U17 World cup, set to be hosted in Qatar later this year with record 48 team format.
Cameroon, meanwhile exit the competition with just 1 point, finishing bottom of the group.
Burkina Faso Dominate Group B
In the group’s other match Burkina Faso beat South Africa 2 - 0 thanks to goals from Issoufou Bara 66’ and Achraf Tapsoba 89’, securing top spot with perfect 9 point. South Africa finish 2nd with 4 point. Both teams have qualified directly for the quarter finals and the U-17 World cup.
The U17 AFCON features 16 teams across four groups with the top 2 in each group qualifying for both the quarter finals and the World Cup. Two additional World Cup slots will be decided through playoffs between the 3rd placed teams.
