Egyptian FA Considers Drastic Action After Al Ahly Boycotts Cairo Derby
The crisis between Al Ahly, the Egyptian Football Association EFA and the Egyptian Professional Clubs Association's escalated to unprecedented level after the federation hinted at severe penalty for the Red Devils following their threat to withdraw from the Egyptian Premier League.
Boycott Sparks Controversy
Al Ahly refused to play their Cairo Derby fixture against Zamalek in the opening round of the championship phase despite their rivals being present and ready for the match.
Referee Mahmoud Bassiouny officially ended the game after 20 minute with the matter now referred to the EFA for final ruling.
In official statement, Al Ahly justified their refusal citing their unfulfilled request for foreign officiating crew. They also announced their intention to reimburse ticket costs for their fans and suggested they may withdraw from the league if their demands remain unmet.
Egyptian FA Responds with Firm Stand
The EFA and the league’s governing body dismissed Al Ahly’s threats affirming that competition regulations would be enforced without compromise.
According to inside sources, the EFA's considering invoking clause within the player affairs regulations which allows for the termination of player contracts if club withdraws from domestic competitions.
Article 5 Section 7, introduced under former EFA president Ahmed Megahed, permits the federation to notify Al Ahly of the potential release of their players should they formally withdraw from the league.
Since domestic league participation is fundamental condition in player contracts with clubs, this move could place Al Ahly’s management in significant predicament.
With tensions rising, all eyes are on how the EFA will proceed and whether Al Ahly'll stand firm on their stance or seek resolution to avoid the drastic consequences of withdrawal.
