Recently appointed as the head of the "Lions", the former FC Metz player has proven himself during his tenure as interim coach, replacing Aliou Cissé.

In a statement to the local press, El Hadji Diouf was full of praise for the new head of the Senegal national team.
In this group, we are lucky to have intelligent players who adhere to any coach's speech. Today, Pape is doing a good job and it's clear that the group is thriving… There's someone making decisions, and his name is Pape Thiaw, along with his staff. The players must perform at their clubs. I never asked to join the national team; it's all about performance on the field. Sadio, Gana never did. So, players frustrated about not being called up need to wait for their turn.
Pape Thiaw aims for a 5th victory
During his time as interim coach, the Dakar native achieved an impeccable record, winning matches against Malawi (twice), Burkina Faso, and Burundi.
He will attempt to continue this momentum in the upcoming encounters against Sudan and Togo in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
