Under fire from national referees in recent weeks, Samuel Eto’o, president of Fecafoot, has chosen to respond with authority.

At the end of April, the Cameroonian Football Referees Association (ACAF) launched a strike demanding payment of outstanding bonuses. The protest was quickly called off after just two days.

So, during the extraordinary general assembly of the Cameroonian Football Federation held this week, Eto’o seized the moment to address the referees directly. Denouncing certain internal irregularities, he insisted on seeing the ongoing reforms through to the end.

Eto'o: “I don’t give in to blackmail!”

"I don’t give in to blackmail! A small group is stirring up trouble to destabilize our federation. But let me remind you that article 14, paragraph B of our statutes requires a renewal of the governing bodies every four years. Yet, it’s been almost ten years since anything was done," he declared, as quoted by Camfoot.

However, Eto’o did acknowledge "the progress made at the continental level," citing the example of Elvis Noupoué, recently voted Africa’s best assistant referee.

A firm statement that sets the stage for a showdown between Fecafoot and the referees. Video:
