FIFA Club World Cup: Speculation Rises Over Which Club Will Replace the Mexican Side
FIFA's officially disqualified Club León from the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup due to violation of multi club ownership regulations. The governing body confirmed in statement on Friday that León failed to meet the ownership criteria, as it belongs to Grupo Pachuca which also owns Pachuca, another team already qualified for the tournament.
Who Will Replace León?
With León’s exclusion, speculation is mounting over which club will take its place. Reports suggest FIFA may invite high profile European club that didn't initially qualify with Barcelona & Liverpool emerging as potential candidates.
For Barcelona, participation in the Club World Cup could provide crucial financial boost with the tournament winner set to receive 145 million euro, funds that could help ease the club’s ongoing financial struggles. Meanwhile Liverpool sees this as opportunity to secure another title especially with their strong position in the Premier League.
Other Potential Replacements
Apart from European giants, other clubs reportedly under consideration include:
- Tigres UANL (Mexico) – 2020 CONCACAF Champions League winners.
- Philadelphia Union (USA) – One of the top clubs in Major League Soccer.
- LD Alajuelense (Costa Rica) – The Costa Rican club's taken its case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), arguing its sporting merit and compliance with ownership rules make it suitable replacement.
Awaiting FIFA’s Decision
The final decision on León’s replacement is expected soon with global anticipation building ahead of the tournament, set to be hosted in the United States from 14 Jun to July 13, 2025.
