π΄ FLASH: Guinea cancels its June friendlies!
Unexpected twist for the Syli National! The Guinean national team was set to play two friendlies in early June against Niger and Tunisia in Morocco, but their schedule has been abruptly scrapped.
The reason: the government, through the Ministry of Sports, has refused to fund the senior teamβs travel and activities.
According to several sources, including ConakrySport, the authorities consider it pointless to spend on a team they currently deem uncompetitive:
βItβs time for FEGUIFOOT to take responsibility,β a government official declared, making it clear that no more public funds will be allocated to the Syli. Itβs a stern message to a federation now tasked with achieving financial independence.
A delicate sporting context
This withdrawal comes at a challenging sporting moment: eliminated from AFCON 2025, Guinea is also struggling in the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, currently sitting fifth in their group.
Yet, these two friendlies would have been valuable preparation ahead of Septemberβs crucial clashes with Somalia and Algeria.
Meanwhile, the ministry has decided to redirect resources toward the local-based squad (Aβ), which is set to compete in CHAN 2025. This strategic decision relegates the senior team to the background and throws Guinean football into turbulent waters.
While their rivals gear up, the Syli National remains grounded.
