France dominates Iraq in Philadelphia today as a violent thunderstorm forces a dramatic two-hour delay during their World Cup clash.

The Group I encounter at Lincoln Financial Field took a bizarre turn after an intense opening 45 minutes. With the European heavyweights holding a narrow 1 goal advantage, Canadian referee Drew Fischer was forced to suspend the match.

A violent storm front carrying dangerous lightning strikes rolled directly over the stadium forcing both squads into the dressing rooms and instructing fans to seek immediate shelter.

The unscheduled halftime stoppage dragged on for nearly 2 hour before conditions were deemed safe enough for second half to resume.

Mbappé & Dembélé punish the underdogs

Once the match finally restarted, Didier Deschamps’ men showed absolutely no signs of rust.

Kylian Mbappé who had already opened the scoring in the 14th minute before the storm hit, wasted no time tracking down his second. In the 54th minute, the clinical captain capitalised on a defensive lapse to double the lead.

The French frontline continued to swarm the penalty area and the pressure paid off again in the 66th minute when winger Ousmane Dembélé fired home a brilliant third goal to put the result completely out of reach.

Tactical struggles leave Iraq on the brink

Deschamps’ fluid 4-2-3-1 system completely overwhelmed the opposition using the blistering pace of Bradley Barcola and Dembélé to exploit wide spaces.

Iraq manager Graham Arnold attempted to set up a resilient 4-4-2 shape but his plans quickly fell apart. Star striker Aymen Hussein was forced off with an early injury after just 25 minutes bringing Ali Al-Hamadi into the action. Despite introducing Rebin Sulaka and Youssef Amyn early in second half to restore structural balance, the defensive line simply could not keep up with the French transitions.

This looming defeat leaves the Lions of Mesopotamia in a desperate position at the bottom of Group I following their previous 4-1 loss to Norway.

Meanwhile France is cruising toward the Round of 32 adding this dominant display to their opening 3-1 victory over Senegal.
