Friendlies: Liberia withdraws from match against Gabon (official)
Originally scheduled to face Gabon during the June international window, Liberia will not play the match. On Tuesday, May 27, the Gabonese Football Federation officially confirmed Liberia's withdrawal, as the team was forced to forfeit due to financial difficulties. Without the necessary funds, the trip could not be arranged.
In their place, Niger has agreed to take on the Panthers. The match will be played on June 6 in Morocco, as originally planned on the calendar.
A crucial test ahead of AFCON and World Cup qualifiers
Even if it's only a friendly, the stakes are real. Gabon is in full preparation for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations and the World Cup qualifiers. Niger, under the guidance of the experienced Badou Zaki since December 2023, has overhauled its squad and promises to be a formidable opponent.
The Panthers will continue their series of tests against Guinea-Bissau on June 9, again on Moroccan soil. It's a prime opportunity for coach Thierry Mouyouma to review his squad and integrate promising youngsters like Ngoma, Killian Obatiegué, or Ndinga.
The victory over Kenya last March (2-1, with a brace from Aubameyang) has reignited Gabon's ambitions.
A press conference is scheduled for May 30 in Libreville to announce the official squad list. The players will begin their preparations on May 31.
