From Chelsea to Kenya: Mikel Obi Brings Premier League Vibes to Nairobi
Former Chelsea and Nigeria midfield star John Mikel Obi's landed in Nairobi to headline football packed weekend aimed at inspiring Kenya’s young talents and bringing the Premier League experience closer to African fans.
The 38 year old arrived to a hero’s welcome at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Friday greeted by fans & traditional dancers.
His visit part of the (Football Fiesta) initiative, is organised by africa cultural enterprise and Afrigamer & supported locally by Arthur Oloo.
Coaching Clinic & Premier League Watch Party
On Saturday Mikel'll lead coaching session at Rusinga School, mentoring aspiring players across various age groups. A media interaction will follow at midday.
“We’re building bridges between young African footballers and global stars. This's about hope, motivation and opportunity” Arthur Oloo said.
The weekend wraps up on Sunday with Premier League watch party at Nairobi Club where Mikel will host fans for the blockbuster clash between his former club Chelsea and new champions Liverpool (6:30pm).
Nostalgia & Legacy
Mikel’s return to Kenya rekindles memories of his super eagles days , he featured in World cup qualifiers at Kasarani in 2009 & 2013 both against the Harambee Stars.
During his 11 year spell at Chelsea, Mikel won 2 Premier League titles, 4 FA Cups, the 2012 Champions league and the 2013 europa league, making over 370 appearances.
He also played for Stoke City, Middlesbrough, Trabzonspor and Lyn Oslo.
Now Mikel's optimistic about Chelsea’s revival, saying:
“The talent's there. If we strengthen the squad in the right areas this summer, we can fight for the title next season”..
Following Mikel’s visit, Man City legend Yaya Toure's expected in Nairobi on 11 May for similar engagements.
