Frozen Chelsea Funds Spark Legal Battle Between UK and Abramovich
The UK government's threatened to take legal action against Russian businessman Roman Abramovich over 2.5 billion pound sterling from the sale of Chelsea.
The proceeds have been frozen since 2022 when Abramovich was sanctioned following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Dispute Over Fund Allocation
Abramovich had pledged the full amount to help victims of the war. However the UK insists the money must be spent solely in Ukraine, aligning with broader european efforts to hold Moscow accountable for the destruction caused by the conflict.
In rare joint statement UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves & Foreign Secretary David Lammy expressed deep frustration , warning:
"We remain determined to direct Chelsea sale proceeds to humanitarian causes in Ukraine. We're ready to pursue this matter in court if needed"..
Talks with Abramovich remain open but the government is prepared to escalate the matter legally if no deal's reached.
