He was rumored to be on his way out. Geoffrey Kondogbia, after a lackluster season, seemed to have no future in Marseille. The arrival of Roberto De Zerbi didn’t help matters. Yet, against all odds, the Central African midfielder has turned the tide.

At 32, the former Atlético Madrid player has proven he still has plenty left in the tank. Positioned in various roles, including central defense, he never flinched. He has consistently delivered with seriousness and steadiness. 24 matches, only one yellow card: Kondogbia plays cleanly, with impressive consistency.

Today, he is one of the Italian coach's trusted men. De Zerbi no longer hides his admiration:

There are others who are really important for us, like Geoffrey Kondogbia. This season, it has been an effort on his part to always remain positive despite never playing in his position. I would really like to thank him, and it would be great if the club could extend his contract, because he deserves it.

Currently under contract until 2026, Kondogbia might be offered an extension. A well-deserved reward for a player who, in the shadows, has made himself indispensable.
