GFA Responds to President Mahama’s Call for Transparency in Black Stars Budget
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has addressed President John Dramani Mahama’s directive for greater transparency in national team expenditures, stating that financial matters concerning the Black Stars fall under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Sports and Recreation.
President Mahama’s Call for Accountability
During his State of the Nation Address on 27 February 2025 President Mahama emphasized the need for full disclosure of government spending on Ghana’s national teams. His remarks followed the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 AFCON which raised concerns about the management of football resources.
The President also announced plans to introduce monthly National Recreation Day and annual National Recreation Festival to promote sports development in the country.
GFA’s Official Response
In statement released on 28 February 2025 the GFA clarified that while it provides the Ministry with draft budget for the national teams, all final financial decisions rest with the government.
“For emphasis, payments made in relation to the Black Stars're exclusively handled by the Ministry of Sports & Recreation” the statement read.
The GFA welcomed the President’s call for budget transparency and expressed full support for ensuring greater accountability in national team expenditures.
Black Stars Focused on World Cup Qualification
Despite missing out on AFCON 2025 the GFA remains optimistic highlighting that Ghana currently sits at the top of its 2026 World Cup qualifying group. The association's strengthened the Black Stars’ technical and management teams ahead of the March qualifiers against tough opponents.
Next Steps
With Ghana set to face key World Cup qualifying fixtures on 21 March & 24 March, the GFA's pledged to work closely with the Ministry of Sports to ensure transparency while keeping the focus on returning the Black Stars to international success.
