Granit Xhaka is involved in a case dating back to 2022. The Swiss midfielder admitted to using a fake vaccination certificate, explaining that he was very worried about the vaccine at the time.

Xhaka admits to the facts

In a statement published on his social media accounts, the 33-year-old player confirmed the facts and accepted responsibility. He explained that he had been “very uncertain” about the vaccine and had felt deep mistrust as well as fear. Rather than seeking answers through official channels, he ultimately decided to obtain a vaccination certificate.

Xhaka now admits that he made the wrong choice and apologises. He also says that he intends to cooperate fully with the authorities handling the case.

Proceedings opened in Switzerland

Following these revelations, the Lucerne public prosecutor’s office opened proceedings against Xhaka and the doctor who allegedly issued him the fake document. The player has also withdrawn from the next Switzerland national team gathering. A first hearing is scheduled for the beginning of October.

The legal consequences remain to be determined. According to Blick, the sentence could reach five years in prison in the most severe scenario, but no penalty has been imposed at this stage.
