Injury Nightmare: Abdelmonem’s Season Ends Early After Ruptured ACL
OGC Nice confirmed that Egyptian international Mohamed Abdelmonem's suffered ruptured ACL dealing major blow to both club and country.
The injury occurred during Nice’s stunning 3 - 1 win over Paris Saint Germain on Friday in Ligue 1. Abdelmonem 26, was forced off in tears on stretcher after clash with Fabian Ruiz, raising immediate fears of serious injury.
In official statement, Nice said:
"Initial assessments raised concerns of serious injury and post match examinations confirmed that Mohamed Abdelmonem's suffered ACL rupture"
At Least 6 Months Out
While the club didn’t specify the exact timeline for recovery, ACL tear typically sidelines players for no less than six months which means:
- Abdelmonem'll miss the remainder of the 2024 - 2025 season.
- He'll likely return about 2 months before the start of the 2025 Africa cup of nations, hosted in Morocco.
Huge Setback for Al Ahly and Al Ain
The injury also impacts transfer plans:
- Al Ahly were hoping to bring Abdelmonem back on loan for the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States this Jun.
- Al Ain of the UAE were reportedly interested in signing him for the same tournament.
Both plans now collapse due to the severity of the injury.
Difficult 1st Season in France
Abdelmonem who moved from Al Ahly to Nice for around 5 million euro last summer, has featured in 18 match across all competitions.
His manager, Franck Haise recently noted that the egyptian defender was still adapting to life in France with language and cultural barriers posing challenges.
Friday's victory over PSG was major boost for Nice’s Champions League hopes but Abdelmonem’s absence leaves significant void in defense for the critical final stretch of the season.
Tough luck for talented defender whose first european adventure's been tragically cut short.
