Is CAF considering more clubs in African competitions? .. A source clarifies
In recent months, several rumors have circulated about a possible increase in the number of clubs participating in African competitions, namely the Champions League and the Confederation Cup, as early as next season.
For the record, the 2024–2025 edition saw 59 teams take part in the Champions League and 50 teams in the Confederation Cup.
A CAF official sets the record straight
Speaking to the Egyptian website FilGoal, a source within the Confederation of African Football (CAF) denied any immediate plans to expand the current format.
"The idea of increasing the number of clubs in African competitions was indeed discussed last March, but it was only an informal suggestion. The executive committee has not yet reviewed it," the source clarified.
They added: "As of now, this proposal is not on the agenda of upcoming executive committee meetings, and there are no indications that a change is imminent in the near future."
To wrap up, let’s recall that the Champions League final will see Pyramids FC (Egypt) face Mamelodi Sundowns (South Africa), while the Confederation Cup final will feature Renaissance Sportive de Berkane (Morocco) against Simba SC (Tanzania).
