Jose Mourinho defends Ruben Amorim: “I lived in the same conditions as him at Porto FC”
In the midst of the Portuguese coach's difficult circumstances with English club Manchester United, former ManU coach Jose Mourinho came to the defense of his compatriot, who is living through bad days with the English giants amid great uncertainty about his future, whether he will continue with the team or not.
However, despite the team's struggles in the 2024-2025 season and losing the only trophy they were competing for, the Europa League, in the final to Tottenham, the management seems to have great faith in the former Sporting Lisbon coach and wants him to continue.
What José Mourinho had to say about Ruben Amorim
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, legendary manager Jose Mourinho shared his perspective on Manchester United's challenges following their Europa League final defeat and drew parallels with Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim's early struggles.
"The impact of losing that Europa League final was undoubtedly significant for Manchester United," Mourinho stated. "When you consider how many years they've gone without competing in European competitions, the psychological blow was substantial. However, it seems the club is backing Ten Hag—they're giving him time and the right conditions to move forward."
Jose Mourinho said.
The 'Special One' then referenced Amorim's recent comments about his difficult first six months at Sporting CP, comparing it to his own rocky start at Porto in January 2002:
"I read Amorim saying he's happy to have already gone through these challenging six months. When I joined Porto, we struggled just to qualify for the UEFA Cup—but look what happened afterward."
Mourinho's Porto tenure ultimately became legendary, delivering two Primeira Liga titles, a UEFA Cup (2003), and an unforgettable Champions League triumph (2004). His remarks suggest Amorim—and Ten Hag—could still turn their early difficulties into future success.
