Kylian Mbappé Seals Third Place for France and Questions Ballon D'Or Credibility
France secured well earned 2 - 0 win over Germany in the UEFA Nations League 3rd place playoff, played at the MHP Arena.
Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring in the 45 minute leading Les Bleus to dominant victory with strong personal performance.
Mbappe: "I Can Only Control the Golden Boot"
Speaking after the game, the French star addressed his Ballon d’or chances, saying:
"Am I candidate for the Ballon d’or? I have my opinion but it doesn't really matter. The only award I can truly influence's the Golden Boot , it depends on what I do. The Ballon d’or doesn’t"
Golden Boot Secured, Ballon d'or in Doubt
Mbappe finished the season with 31 goal, earning the Golden Boot ahead of Mohamed Salah.
Yet his Ballon d'or hopes have faded with Ousmane Dembele (Champions league & domestic double with PSG) and Lamine Yamal (domestic treble with barcelona) emerging as stronger candidates.
Echoes of Ronaldo’s Criticism
Mbappe’s comments echoed past criticisms by Cristiano Ronaldo who also slammed the Ballon d'or’s voting system:
"These individual awards no longer reflect the reality .. there’s no clear criteria anymore" Ronaldo had said.
He added:
"Winning the Champions league should define the best player. But that’s no longer the case"
Germany's Disappointment Continues
With this result, France sealed 3rd place while Germany slumped to fourth adding to their ongoing struggles at the continental level.
