FC Nantes officially announced this Tuesday, May 20, the end of its collaboration with head coach Antoine Kombouaré. Having returned to the bench for a second stint in March 2024, the renowned 61-year-old French manager will not see out his contract, which was initially set to run until 2026.

The club also thanked his assistant Yves Bertucci and fitness coach Michel Dufour.

Despite securing their Ligue 1 status on the final matchday with a 3-0 win over Montpellier last weekend, the mood remains bittersweet. Nantes endured a lackluster season, marked by prolonged slumps, and never truly managed to reassure their supporters.

While Kombouaré had hoped to continue working with a reshaped squad, the club’s management decided otherwise, believing that a fresh start was necessary.

A mixed record despite leaving his mark

During his first spell (2021–2023), Kombouaré notably delivered a Coupe de France trophy and a European adventure for the Canaries.

However, his second tenure was far less glamorous, defined by a battle for survival. Despite some improvement in 2025 and an effective attacking duo in Simon and Abline, the team’s overall ambition and style were lacking.

Disappointed by the overall trajectory, the board will now explore new options as they look to begin a new chapter.
