Ligue 1: Towards the End of the ASSE - Ibrahima Wadji Partnership

AS Saint-Étienne and Ibrahima Wadji appear to be heading towards a split at the end of the current season. After two mixed seasons, the club from Saint-Étienne is not considering extending the Senegalese striker's contract this summer.

A Promising Start Quickly Halted

Ibrahima Wadji joined ASSE in August 2022 from Qarabağ FK, with the ambition of strengthening Saint-Étienne's attack. In just his second match, he found the back of the net against Girondins de Bordeaux, signaling a successful integration. He confirmed his potential by scoring two braces in matches against Chamois Niortais and SM Caen. Despite an inconsistent first half of the season, he finished the campaign with 12 goals in 30 matches.

Repeated Injuries and a Blank Season

The following season, Ibrahima Wadji faced a series of muscle injuries. These physical setbacks limited his participation to only nine matches in Ligue 2 and one appearance in the Ligue 1 playoffs, where he scored a goal. During the 2023/2024 campaign, the Stéphanois were promoted to the first division. Unfortunately, the situation for the 29-year-old player did not improve. After four matches this season in Ligue 1, the Senegalese player suffered injuries in August 2024, followed by more from September to November. Since December 8, 2024, Ibrahima Wadji has been absent from the field. Despite intensive care, notably at INF Clairefontaine, and a recent return to group training, his return to competition remains uncertain.

An Uncertain Future at Saint-Étienne

Wadji's contract expires on June 30, 2025. The ASSE management does not seem inclined to extend the player who will turn 30 in May. With his recurring physical problems, he hasn't had the opportunity to prove himself and attract the attention of other clubs. What does the future hold for Wadji after Saint-Étienne? Stay tuned...
